The Walking Dead universe is not only expanding with the arrival of new shows focused on some of its most popular characters, but also with the rising of new variants of zombies that will make life much more difficult for the survivors. Last weekend, AMC released the first episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, the latest spinoff from the franchise following new adventures of the character played by Norman Reedus. This new story is set in France, where Daryl will meet some new survivors, but also new variants of zombies that appear to be much more threatening, dangerous and powerful than those presented in the original series and its previous spinoff shows. And there's a good reason for that.
In the first episode, Daryl meets some 'Burners,' a new type of zombie he has never seen before, who possess acidic skin. Later, Clémence Poésy's Isabelle informs him that it is just one of the species that can be found in France. In a recent article published by AMC Talk, it is implied that these new variants are not a natural evolution, but rather a human creation. The article also recalls a dialogue from another The Walking Dead spinoff, World Beyond, where it was already anticipated that much faster and more violent variants of zombies existed in Paris.
"What comes next is shocking and terrifying for its implications as to what Daryl will face now that he’s on French soil in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. The scientist reanimates extremely quickly, and she’s more aggressive and faster than any walkers we’ve seen thus far in The Walking Dead Universe. With that in mind, we come to Episode 1 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, L’ame Perdue, where Daryl quickly learns that the walkers, or Les Affamés (the hungry ones) as Isabelle calls them, are very different than the ones he’s used to."
The Walking Dead Is Breaking Old Zombie Rules, but That’s Good for the Franchise
Just as Twilight broke several of the conventions established for the world of vampires in film and TV, many films and series have done the same with the universe of zombies. But The Walking Dead was not one of them, at least until very recently.
With the end of the original series, the franchise opened the door to the appearance of new, evolved and far more dangerous variants of zombies that do not necessarily respond to those basic rules such as slow mobility. While staying within the rules established for this type of zombie tale was a great help for the show and no doubt helped it become one of the great stories set within the world of the undead, changing them could be extremely beneficial for the future of the franchise. Especially with the arrival of new stories.
New zombies represent new threats, which also means new conflicts, meaning the franchise won't feel so repetitive. But, also, if some of these new zombies are created by humans, the survivors are not only threatened by the undead, but also by their own kind, something that has been part of the core of The Walking Dead since the beginning. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon premiered on September 10, and has already been renewed for a second season.
