  •  Loki's revelation as a Frost Giant and the heir to the Jotunheim throne adds a new layer of meaning to Odin's statement.
  •  A theory suggests that Loki may become the new ruler of the Time Variance Authority, fulfilling Odin's prophecy and becoming the multiverse's ultimate defender.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has left various teases scattered throughout its many Phases, and it can finally pay off Odin’s biggest prophecy in the upcoming Phase 6. The MCU has gradually expanded to cover stories that go beyond Earth, and one of its first adventures in other worlds was Thor. The God of Thunder’s first solo movie also introduced his brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), and their father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), and it featured the big reveal of Loki being adopted, as he was actually a Frost Giant and the son of Laufey, an enemy of Odin.

This marked the beginning of Loki’s turn into an antagonist, and he was one of the villains in the first Avengers movie. Meanwhile, Thor had to prove himself worthy of not only Mjolnir but also the throne of Asgard, as he was the one who would inherit it, but as he found his own path in life, he also realized he wasn’t really meant to be king (though he did his best to rule New Asgard). However, Odin delivered a prophecy at the beginning of Thor that involved his two sons becoming rulers, and now it can finally pay off in Phase 6 thanks to one of the upcoming crossover events.

Odin Told Loki And Thor They Were Both Destined To Be Kings

Odin and Frigga raised Thor and Loki as brothers, doing their best to not allow Loki to feel different from his brother nor let him know his true nature as a Frost Giant. Both Loki and Thor were taught about the responsibilities of being the king of Asgard, as well as the history of Asgard’s many wars and other valuable lessons about maintaining peace when they took the throne. However, even though Loki proved to Odin that he was absolutely capable of being the king of Asgard, the Allfather had already decided that Thor would take the throne, but he told his sons that both of them “were born to be kings”.

Before the reveal of Loki’s origin, this line was understood as Thor and Loki having the same chance to become kings of Asgard, even though only one of them was going to ascend to the throne, but it took a different meaning after the reveal. As Laufey was the king of Jotunheim and the Frost Giants, Loki was the heir to the throne, so Odin wasn’t lying when he said that both his sons were destined to be kings. However, Loki didn’t become king of Jotunheim, and instead, after betraying and killing Laufey in Asgard (in order to be seen as a hero by Frigga), Loki attempted to destroy Jotunheim and the Frost Giants. Luckily for the latter, Thor destroyed the Bifrost, stopping Loki from killing them.

At the end of Thor: The Dark World, Loki took the throne of Asgard as he posed as his father, but his tricks were discovered by Thor in Thor: Ragnarok. The third Thor movie also saw the death of Odin, meaning that Thor was now the king of Asgard, but this realm was destroyed by Hela. Thor, with the help of Valkyrie and Loki, saved as many Asgardians as he could and they eventually settled on Earth in what’s now called New Asgard. As mentioned above, Thor served as the ruler of New Asgard for a while before naming Valkyrie as the new king, so Thor and Loki have both been kings at some point – however, the real pay-off of Odin’s prophecy will arrive in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Secret Wars' Best Loki Theory Would Pay Off Odin's Prophecy

As there are no plot details about the upcoming crossover event Avengers: Secret Wars yet, there are many theories on what it will be about, who will be the villain, and what will happen to the MCU’s multiverse. Among those is a theory (via CBR) that suggests Loki will take the place of He Who Remains as the new ruler of the Time Variance Authority (TVA). Just like He Who Remains, Loki is a man out of time as his timeline was pruned and both are cursed with knowledge (mirroring Thanos and Iron Man, as well), and thanks to this, Loki is the only being who knows how to stop a multiversal war.

Loki, then, will have the difficult task of maintaining the multiverse instead of the Sacred Timeline and getting rid of the rest of Kang’s variants, while also serving as a mentor to the Avengers and company in their battle against the many Kangs. Of course, this also paints a tragic ending for Loki, as he could either sacrifice himself to save the multiverse or he could be doomed to an eternity of isolation, just like He Who Remains. A variant of this theory suggests Loki will create a Council of Lokis to keep order at the TVA, so instead of pruning variants and timelines, the Council would work together to relocate them or give them a parallel timeline outside the Sacred Timeline.

This would not only pay off Odin’s prophecy, as Loki would be the ruler of the TVA and thus the Sacred Timeline and the multiverse, but it could also be his “glorious purpose”. This is also a fitting ending for this variant of the God of Mischief in the MCU, who after losing everything, properly redeemed himself and became the multiverse’s ultimate defender.
