Stranger Things season 5 producer Shawn Levy reveals a key tradition the show will continue. Netflix’s smash sci-fi series last streamed episodes back in 2022, and now thanks to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, the wait will be longer than expected for new installments to be filmed. When Eleven, Dustin, Mike, Will, Steve and the gang finally do return, it will be for one final adventure, as season 5 is set to be the show’s last.

As the wait continues for Stranger Things season 5 to begin shooting, EP Levy offered up a nugget of good news, revealing in an interview with Collider that despite scheduling conflicts and other obstacles, he fully intends to return and direct at least one episode in the show's final run. This keeps alive a long-standing show tradition that saw Levy taking the helm for episodes in seasons 1-4. Check out what the producer had to say in the space below:
"I believe for that show, I've been alongside Matt and Ross Duffer for all these years. I direct episodes every year. It's a part of our brotherhood. It's a part of my commitment and my love of the show, connecting with it as a director, as well as an executive producer, so I will go through hoops to figure out calendars to direct at least one episode."
Levy Has Directed Some Of The Show’s Best Episodes
Levy’s directorial track record with Stranger Things has seen him take the helm for the third and fourth episodes of each prior season, and some of these have proven to be among the series’ most pivotal installments. In season 1, Levy had the reins for “Holly, Jolly,” the episode notorious for killing off fan favorite character Barb, and “The Body.” Season 2 saw Levy taking directorial duties on “The Pollywog” and “Will the Wise,” and in season 3 he handled “The Case of the Missing Lifeguard” and “The Sauna Test.”
Levy’s finest moment as a TV director may have come in Stranger Things season 4 however, when he directed the fourth episode “Dear Billy” (following up his work on “The Monster and the Superhero”). This is of course the episode where a distraught Max, convinced she is set to become the next victim of the all-powerful Vecna, indeed becomes possessed by that demonic entity. Famously, Max only escapes Vecna thanks to the song “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush, which defeats the demon’s spell. Given all that Levy has contributed to Stranger Things as a director, it’s good news that he will be back to helm at least one episode in season 5, and help the beloved Netflix series finish out its run.
