The era of The Walking Dead spinoffs is now in full swing as the trailer and opening credits for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon finally reaches audiences, but when it comes down to it, what do these reveal about what is to come for the fan-favorite character, especially when it comes to zombies? The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is the latest in a string of spinoff series including The Walking Dead: Dead City and the upcoming The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. This time around, the series will follow Daryl Dixon as he inexplicably washes up in France and discovers some strange connections.
The trailer for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon revealed plenty about where this particular series is going and what Daryl will find in France. Alongside stunning shots of abandoned French architecture, there are new character reveals, storyline explanations, and of course, even more zombies. More than that though, it seems that this latest series may just delve into issues that have already appeared in previous The Walking Dead spinoffs, such as zombie variants. The biggest hint at this hides in the show's opening credits with just a few specific words.
Daryl Dixon's Opening Credits Suggest Zombies Can Be Controlled
Though it is barely more than 30 seconds long, the opening credits of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon offer major hints as to where the series is headed, and unsurprisingly, it has to do with zombies. Around second 17, there is a close up shot of a book with diagrams and notes written in French. The diagrams depict the human body and organs, meanwhile the notes seem to be discussing an experiment. This can be inferred by two specific notes on the left-hand page: "controuez la mort" and "point d'enter" When translated, it becomes clear that this is likely an experiment pertaining to zombies, and more importantly, controlling them.
First and foremost, "controuez la mort" translate to "control the dead." Honestly, that phrase leaves little up to interpretation, but plenty up for the imagination. It raises questions about why the French wanted to control the dead and whether they actually succeded in this endeavor. The second phrase "point d'enter," means "point of entry," and also includes an arrow pointing to the neck of the human diagram. This must mean that whatever serum the French have created, they put into the zombie by sticking it into their neck. These two phrases alone paint quite a picture of French zombies and French survivors.
What Is An "Uber?" Do Walking Dead Variants Have A New Name?
Another term that stands out in this book close-up shot is "Uber." This word stands alone on the page and is surrounded by a box and an exclamation point, meaning it is likely pretty important. Perhaps "Uber" is what the French are calling their controlled zombies, but the bigger question is why that name. The most obvious connection is to the real ride-share service, Uber. In The Walking Dead universe, the zombie outbreak occurred in 2010, and Uber first came out in 2009, so this would make logical sense. Plus, parallels between a ride-share service and a controlled zombie can definitely be formed.
Seeing the word "Uber" in the close-up and realizing that that is likely a name for these new, controlled zombies is actually a fairly big event, because it means that The Walking Dead is introducing new zombie types. In The Walking Dead world, zombie variants are zombies that have been infected with mutated strains of Wildfire, which ultimately gives them different characteristics to a normal zombie. So far, the series has seen zombie variants that are faster, smarter, and stronger than a normal zombie, making them a massive threat. It seems that the "Uber" will be yet another version of a mutated zombie.
The Walking Dead Already Hinted Zombie Variants Were Man-Made
Furthermore, this portion of the opening credits confirms one The Walking Dead zombie theory. Namely, there have been hints throughout The Walking Dead spinoffs that the zombie variants are man-made, and based on the diagrams and notes in the opening credits, this definitely seems like it could be true. When zombie variants were first introduced during The Walking Dead, it seemed that these variants had become infected just by sheer luck. It was very much unclear how the zombie variants came to be how they are. However, one pivotal scene in The Walking Dead: World Beyond hinted at a much larger and haunting situation.
In the post-credits scene of The Walking Dead: World Beyond, a scientist and a survivor have a conversation in a French lab that is explosive in its revelations. For context, it seems that the lab has been abandoned, but at a certain time, was filled with teams of scientists named after flowers. The survivor, clearly angry, explains that he blames the scientist and her teams for the zombie outbreak. He says, "You started this." Although the scientist throws the blame back on the survivor, the message is clear: no matter who released it, the zombie virus was made by scientists in a lab. The Daryl Dixon opening credits confirm this.
Zombie Variants Have A Big Connection To Daryl Dixon's Spinoff Villains
A final hint that the opening credits gives up is that these new zombie variants, Ubers, may be directly connected to the villains of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. In the trailer, the group Daryl goes up against drive trucks with a unique symbol on them that looks similar to a torch. As it turns out, that same torch symbol can be seen in the book as well, alongside the notes and diagrams. Ultimately, this makes the creation of Ubers seem all the more nefarious, and of course, raises even more questions. Why are these villains trying to control zombies? What is their purpose? And once again, have they succeeded?
Despite being a brief moment in an already brief opening credits, the close-up book shot says a lot about what Daryl is facing in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. While there's little question that the show will be filled with incredible action and intrigue a la Daryl Dixon, it's exciting to know that the story that The Walking Dead has been building to will continue on in this spinoff. Now, audiences have plenty to look forward as they dive into the first episode of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
