How Wheel Of Time Season 2, Episode 7's Big Betrayal Changes The Books

The surprise betrayal in The Wheel of Time season 2, episode 7 is a significant departure from the books that could have massive ramifications.

SUMMARY

  •  Siuan's betrayal of Moiriane marks her as an enemy of the Dragon Reborn, setting up a tense and adversarial relationship with the Aes Sedai.
  •  The events in Cairhien will lead to the truth about the Dragon Reborn coming out, potentially resulting in Siuan's deposition and the selection of a new Amyrlin Seat.
  •  Siuan's actions have forced Verin to choose between the White Tower and the Dragon Reborn, leading to potential expulsion and stilling for Verin and her departure from Tar Valon.
  • The Wheel Of Time broke away from the source material yet again when it pitted Moiraine Damodred against Siuan Sanche. The Wheel of Time season 2, episode 7, titled “Daes Dae’mar” forced characters to pick sides as the debate over Rand’s fate reached a boiling point. .

For years, Moiraine and Siuan have secretly shared the same goal: finding the Dragon Reborn and guiding him to the Last Battle where he’ll take on the Dark One and save the world. However, the events of the episode caused the two characters to walk separate paths. Rand’s attitude seemingly convinced Siuan that he should be caged rather than allowed to walk free. As a result of her disagreement with Moiraine, she used the power of the Three Oaths to force Moiraine into closing the Waygate. Thanks to Lanfear’s intervention, the characters escaped Cairhien regardless, but the consequences of what happened are sure to be far-reaching, and ones that will set up more changes to Robert Jordan’s story.

Siuan Sanche Has Become An Enemy Of The Dragon Reborn

Siuan's betrayal of Moiriane was a game-changing decision in “Daes Dae’mar.” Like the book character, Siuan had a conversation with Rand about what it means to be the Dragon Reborn. But instead of shielding Rand and deciding to use him as a weapon as she did in the show, Siuan made no moves against him. In supporting Rand (albeit for the purpose of controlling him), Siuan evolved into an ally of sorts, even serving as a protagonist in her own right. In contrast, the TV incarnation of Siuan Sanche has openly opposed Moiraine and Rand, ending any perceived alliance between them.

Siuan has marked herself – and in turn, the Aes Sedai of the White Tower – as enemies of the Dragon Reborn. In the source material, Rand never did have a pleasant relationship with the Aes Sedai, but they weren’t already on such bad terms in the timeframe of The Great Hunt’s story. Making things worse is Lanfear’s involvement. Few Aes Sedai would be inclined to side with the Dragon Reborn knowing that he received help from Lanfear, a member of the 13 Forsaken in Wheel of Time. All things considered, the events that transpired in Cairhien laid the groundwork for a much more tense and adversarial relationship with the Aes Sedai in the episodes to come.

The Wheel Of Time Changes The Books' Setup For A New Amyrlin Seat

=In the books, Siuan and Moiraine's secrecy over the Dragon Reborn culminate in the former being deposed and stilled. Even though Siuan has acted against him in the TV show, this is unlikely to stop this arc from happening. That said, it looks like the circumstances and the fallout will be different. The chaos that occurred in Cairhien - and what's about to happen in Falme - is sure to lead to the truth finally coming out. When it does, Siuan's role in it will surely come to light, especially since she had the Dragon Reborn in her custody. This should pave the way for the Aes Sedai to turn against Siuan and choose a new Amyrlin Seat. In the books, the person who spearheaded Siuan's downfall and became her replacement was Elaida, but since she hasn't been introduced yet, Liandrin is in a good position to take her place.

Because Of Siuan, Verin Has Betrayed The Aes Sedai

Interestingly, Siuan's choice set a second act of betrayal int motion. Earlier in the season, Verin Mathwin shared an exchange with Moiraine that indicated she’d aid them in her quest to help the Dragon Reborn if needed. Unfortunately for Verin, episode 7 made her choose between the White Tower and the Dragon Reborn. This didn't happen in the books, but Siuan capturing Rand forced Verin's hand. Since it was she who sent Leane away and freed Rand, Verin won’t be able to deny her role in his escape. This is likely to culminate in Verin’s expulsion from the White Tower, and perhaps worse: stilling. In any case, Verin becoming a traitor as early as season 2 is surprising, especially when considering that her book counterpart remained obedient to the White Tower for quite some time.

The book version of Verin eventually did turn against her fellow Aes Sedai, but that was only after Elaida usurped Siuan and took her place as Amyrlin Seat. Verin sided with the rebels in the sixth book, The Lord of Chaos. As for the TV show’s canon, Verin Mathwin may have to go rogue, fleeing the White Tower immediately and perhaps linking up with some of the other characters in The Wheel of Time’s future. This would give the show an easy way to send Verin along with Rand and the others into the Aiel Waste, which is expected to serve as the setting for season 3 since it'll be adapting the fourth book, The Shadow Rising.
